Maintaining or managing normal blood pressure is a goal for many Americans who seek a healthy lifestyle. It’s important to offer consumers dietary supplementation that supports a healthy cardiovascular system.

L-arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is produced by the body and naturally converted into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide plays an important role in blood vessel dilation, circulation and regulation of blood pressure. L-arginine supports blood flow and overall cardiovascular health. Levels of L-arginine naturally decrease due to several factors, including the aging process, quality of diet and genetics, creating a need for dietary supplementation for those wanting to support healthy blood pressure.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is present in every cell in the body, and often lacking in the diet. Magnesium is critical for many processes in the body, including support for maintaining healthy blood pressure. Our product contains magnesium in both citrate and orotate forms, supporting the bioavailability and levels of magnesium, relaxation of blood vessels and overall cardiovascular health.

The olive tree from the Oleaceae family and native to the Mediterranean and parts of Asia has been used for thousands of years. The olive has an extensive history of having significant health benefits, primarily due to the predominant phenolic constituent, oleuropein. As the main active component in olive leaf, oleuropein has been shown to support healthy blood vessels, blood pressure and the cardiovascular system. Olive leaf extract has also been shown to have an important antioxidant role, especially in overall cardiovascular health. The olive leaf extract in our product is standardized to contain a minimum 20% oleuropein.

Grape seed extract is primarily recognized as a polyphenolic compound, containing antioxidants that can help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. Grape seed extract is a great source of proanthocyanidins, which offer diverse overall health benefits including supporting blood flow, healthy blood pressure, blood vessel integrity and cardiovascular health.

Product Composition

L-Arginine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid that serves a variety of functions, including playing a role in nitric oxide production and helping the body build protein. The body manufactures L-arginine as needed, but in times of stress, L-arginine becomes essential. L-arginine is found in most protein- rich foods, such as fish, red meat, poultry, soy, whole grains, beans and dairy products. L-arginine serves as a building block, or substrate, for the synthesis of Nitric Oxide (NO). NO is involved in the regulation of blood pressure by acting as a vasodilator in the circulatory system, supporting regulation of cardiac contractility, increased blood supply and decreased blood pressure. Changes in vascular endothelium are involved in high blood pressure, which can be regulated by the actions of arginine and magnesium. NO also inhibits platelet aggregation and synthesis of reactive oxygen species and contributes to the homeostasis of vessels via vascular smooth muscle contraction and growth. Those with high blood pressure often show impaired Nitric Oxide (NO) signaling pathways due to several mechanisms, including inadequate substrate levels, such as L-Arginine. (1)

 

Magnesium

The mechanism of the beneficial effect of magnesium on hypertension may include the modulation of vascular tone, prevention of endothelial dysfunction, carotid intima thickness, atherosclerosis, insulin resistance and diabetes (type 2). Magnesium is critical in the migration of endothelial cells, specialized cells that line the inner blood vessel. A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials showed magnesium supplementation has a beneficial effect on blood pressure or hypertension in participants with insulin resistance, prediabetes, or noncommunicable chronic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. (2) One mechanism by which magnesium lowers blood pressure is by acting like a natural calcium channel blocker. Magnesium competes with sodium for binding sites on vascular smooth muscle cells, increases prostaglandin E, binds to potassium, induces endothelial-dependent vasodilation, improves endothelial dysfunction in hypertensive and diabetic patients, decreases intracellular calcium and sodium, and reduces blood pressure. (3)

 

Olive Leaf Extract - Oleuropein

The primary active constituents of olive oil include oleic acid, squalene and phenolic compounds with the main ones being hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, which give extra-virgin olive oil its bitter, pungent taste. (4) The high oleuropein content from olive leaf is well studied, and the leaves contain phenolic compounds at a much higher concentration than those of the olive fruit and oil. (5). Oleuropein, the main glycoside present in olives, and hydroxytyrosol, the principal degradation product of oleuropein present in olive oil, have both been linked to reduction of coronary heart disease. (6)

 

Grapeseed Extract

Grape is one of the richest sources of polyphenols among fruits. 60%–70% of total polyphenols are stored in grape seeds, including flavonoids, stilbenes and proanthocyanidins - the most important class of biologically active compounds in grapes. Flavonoids possess cardioprotective, neuroprotective and antiaging properties. Grape seeds are one of the best sources of proanthocyanidins, which build oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs), having unique antioxidant properties. (7)

 

Garlic

Blood pressure reducing properties of garlic are related with the hydrogen sulfide production and allicin content liberated from alliin and the enzyme alliinase which is assumed to possess angiotensin II inhibiting and vasodilating effects. Various sulfur compounds derived from garlic cause the release of hydrogen sulfide from human red blood cells. Hydrogen sulfide is a naturally occurring cell signaling molecule with several cardioprotective effects, including vascular smooth muscle relaxation, decreased blood pressure, and protection against oxidative damage.
